About the Three Fires Indigenous History Program

Boozhoo! Niminawaanigoz ji-waabaminan omaa!

Hello! We are happy to see you here!

Who We Are

The Three Fires Indigenous History Program is an initiative of the Milwaukee County Historical Society dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating Indigenous history, culture, and traditional knowledge through education, community engagement, and experiential learning.

The Council of Three Fires

Our work is inspired by the Council of Three Fires, a historic alliance of the Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa), and Potawatomi Nations. For generations, these closely related Anishinaabe peoples maintained strong cultural, political, economic, and kinship ties throughout the Great Lakes region. Together, they developed a lasting alliance that played an important role in shaping the history, relationships, and trade networks of the region.

The Three Fires are often remembered through their traditional responsibilities within the confederacy:

  • Ojibwe - Keepers of the Faith and sacred teachings

  • Odawa - Keepers of Trade and commerce

  • Potawatomi - Keepers of the Fire and council traditions

These teachings reflect the interconnected responsibilities that strengthened the alliance and helped sustain Indigenous communities across the Great Lakes for centuries.

At the Three Fires Indigenous History Program, we believe that education is most powerful when it is experienced. Through interactive exhibits, cultural spaces, storytelling, traditional gardens, community gatherings, and educational programming, we create opportunities for visitors to engage with Indigenous perspectives in ways that are meaningful, respectful, and accessible.

Our mission extends beyond preserving the past. The Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi peoples continue to maintain vibrant cultures, languages, traditions, and communities today. We are committed to honoring both the historical legacy and the living presence of Indigenous nations by creating spaces that encourage learning, reflection, dialogue, and connection.

Whether you are exploring Indigenous history for the first time, seeking a deeper understanding of the Great Lakes region, or looking to engage with cultural traditions and community events, we welcome you to learn alongside us.

Miigwech! We invite you to explore, learn, and help carry forward the stories, knowledge, and traditions that continue to connect past, present, and future generations.
